Tumult makes noise. Tumult texturizes, accentuates and adds warmth and age. Tumult comes with 50 hand-picked noises. You can play them raw, let them follow your sounds, or duck them away. Tumult comes with an 5-band EQ that lets you shape the noises to your liking. Tumult is a free and open source 64bit VST3 effect plugin for Linux and Windows.

How it works

The effect plugin plays one of 50 noises that can be added to the actual audio signal using the ‘Mix’ knob. The ‘Gain’ knob controls the volume, and the equaliser controls the frequency response of the noise – the actual audio signal is not affected.

In ‘Raw’ mode, the noise is played back without any influence. In ‘Duck’ mode, the noise is ducked away by the actual audio signal. In ‘Folllow’ mode, the noise only plays when the actual audio signal is playing (depending on the threshold).

How to install
Unzip the downloaded file.
Copy the entire ‘Tumult.vst3’ folder into the vst folder of your operating system. For Linux, this is the .vst3 folder in the home directory. For Windows, this is in ‘C:\Program Files\Common Files\VST3’.
Copy the ‘TumultSamples’ folder wherever you want, for example to a location where you also save other samples.
In order for Tumult to find the samples, the path to the sample folder must be specified in the plugin. To do this, open the plugin in a host of your choice, open the settings, select ‘Change Sample Folder Location’ and select the ‘TumultSamples’ folder. For the changes to take effect, you must remove the plugin from the host and reload it.

Crunchrr is a really simple to use effect that adds digital artifacts to your sounds.

It works by modulating a small fractional delay line at an audio rate at high frequency, resulting in a bit crush/sample divide/erosion kind of effect.

I made this weird thing in time for Halloween 2023. It generates the sound of tuning through a shortwave radio band, and you can bring in fake EVP (Electronic Voice Phenomena) and add your own spooky spoken words. Lots of info in the User Guide and Background info folder.

Guillotine is an audio slicer / gate effect.

It chops up segments of audio in sync with the BPM of the track. Up to 32 divisions can be made from one section, which can then be modulated, bitcrushed, distorted, or simply silenced.

In the Sever FX setting, the top right knob can be used in Relent mode as an expander, rather than as the default noise gate – this means that the chosen segments will be made quieter rather than totally silenced.

In the other FX settings, the top right knob will operate in Inflict mode, increasing the severity of the chosen treatment.

Codec is a degrader designed for sound destruction.

Unlike other plugins that simulate degradation in “old school” ways like vinyl, tape or cassette, Codec degrades sound in the most common way we hear today, through internet compression algorithms.

Codec is essentially a container that holds an audio compressor (not that kind of compressor) so you can compress and then decompress your sound, in real time, in your DAW of choice.

Since Codec is basically just a container, we figured it would only be fair to provide it for free as a VST3 and AU plugin, so enjoy.

Packet Drop: Codec can simulate a poor internet connection through the use of it’s “Loss” system (as well as how ‘lost packets’ are handled). Packets can either be lost totally (and the internal algorithm will try to “reconstruct” your sound in real-time), or they can be held and repeated (for a super glitchy effect).

A “Bit” Of Crunch: You can take Codec to it’s limits via the crunch section. Massive amounts of gain can be applied to the frequency section of your choosing, and then removed once compression & decompression have been completed, keeping your sound at the same volume but adding even more artifacts.

Mode Selection: The internal state of the algorithm can also be altered. If you click on the Lese logo in the title bar, you can switch between a “voice” mode, a “music” mode, and a “low-latency” mode. Each of these modes respond to incoming sounds a bit differently.
